Der beginn einer systematischen geologischen untersuchung sachsens geht auf eine anweisung des sächsischen kurfürsten zur aufsuchung und erfassung von erzlagerstätten, vor allem aber auch von steinkohlenvorkommen zur ergänzung der brennstoffvorräte, aus dem jahre 1788 zurück. die den einzelnen untersuchungsberichten beigegebenen geologischen karten wurden später von carl friedrich naumann und bernhard von cotta überarbeitet und in elf geognostischen spezialkarten für sachsen und teile angrenzender länder bis 1845 herausgegeben.
